We were heading up South Mountain in western Maryland. South Mountain is near Boonsboro, Antietam, and Middletown. When you get to the top, there is a section of the Appalachian Trail there plus Washington's Monument. At the top, you are actually looking at Pennsylvania. During the Civil War, the battle of South Mountain was fought there. South Mountain is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains
